However, during the rental period (which can last for months), the responsibility of maintaining the comfort of the pillow shifts to you. Night sweat, wet hair, or simply room dust can make the pillow smell musty or even go flat prematurely.
As bedding specialists, here are 3 secrets to caring for your pillow so it feels like new every night:
1. Never Go to Sleep with Wet Hair
This is the number one golden rule. Dacron/silicone-filled pillows (like the ones we rent out) are moisture-absorbent. If you sleep with your hair still damp, water will seep into the pillow fibres. This trapped moisture is a "haven" for the growth of mould and bacteria that cause musty odours. Dry your hair completely before laying your head down!
2. Fluff Your Pillow Every Morning
Pillows will flatten in the middle due to the weight of your head overnight. To restore their shape and air circulation, fluff them.
- How to do it: Press and clap both sides of the pillow simultaneously (like playing an accordion) for a few seconds every time you make your bed in the morning. The pillow will instantly plump up again.
3. Air It Briefly Under the Morning Sun
If your room feels damp (due to the rainy season or poor ventilation), try to air the pillow under the morning sun (between 8 and 10 am) at least once a week. Natural UV rays are highly effective at killing dust mites and eliminating any developing odours.
Warning: Do Not Wash It Yourself!
